Side event: Islands and low carbon pathways
Thursday November 16th 2017 – 16:30-18:00
CITIES & REGIONS PAVILION
Program
In most small island developing states, energy needs are still dependent on imported fossil fuels even though domestic renewable energy sources can meet their energy needs. Experts will discuss how islands can envisage the future of their energy systems, and deploy solutions that will build economies with net zero greenhouse gas emissions. Technical constraints related to power systems management that may limit the grid decarbonization and the subsequent massive introduction of intermittent electricity production will be highlighted. Lessons from modeling exercises will illustrate the debate about their particular needs in terms of renewables integration, power access or secured electricity supply.
Speakers:
- Nadia MAÏZI (CMA, MINES ParisTech, PSL Research University)
- Edi ASOUMOU (CMA, MINES ParisTech, PSL Research University),
- Sandrine SELOSSE (CMA, MINES ParisTech, PSL Research University)
- Vincent MAZAURIC (Schneider Electric)
- Emanuele TAIBI (IRENA)
- A representative of the French Ministry for Environment
This side event, which aims to provide a forum for high-quality exchanges to consider the plausibility of future energy systems and the challenges of their deployment, will be the opportunity to demonstrate the contribution and interest of prospective modeling, to establish a dialogue between policy makers, experts and scientists. Beyond this side event will contribute to the reflection on the direction of public and private strategies, in an accompanying process of climate negotiations.
